Hardware guide

An HDR file deserves a capable screen.

The peak value written in a file is not the brightness every monitor can show. These are the checks that matter before buying or setting up a display for HDR photography and video.

01

Verified HDR performance

Look for VESA DisplayHDR or DisplayHDR True Black certification and check the model in the official database. A generic “HDR” label says little about highlight quality.

02

Black, light and colour

Consider peak output, large-area behaviour, black control, gamut and uniformity together. OLED and mini-LED have different trade-offs.

03

A complete Windows chain

You need an HDR10 display, suitable connection and driver, and HDR enabled in Windows. Use Photo-View to check the same file in SDR and HDR.

The complete chain

Check the computer before the screen.

Acutance runs on 64-bit Windows. HDR also needs a suitable GPU and port, a compatible connection, and HDR enabled in the system. An SDR display still shows the JPEG base.
